Taking an Exam

Many city, county or state regulations require you to pass an exam accredited under the Conference for Food Protection (CFP) Food Protection Manager Certification Program Standards. This accreditation assures the exam meets required development and operational standards and verifies the exam measures the knowledge and skills that the food protection manager needs to know to keep food safe and prevent foodborne illness. The ServSafe print and online food safety exams are accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under CFP Standards and are nationally accepted.

  • A Registered ServSafe Proctor is required to administer the exam.* The Registered Proctor must be present at all times during the exam and must follow strict guidelines for administering the exam.
  • The exam is available online or in print format.
  • The print exam is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French Canadian, Large Print and an Instructor version for those looking to apply as a Certified ServSafe Instructor..
  • The online exam is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, along with an Instructor version.

*If you don’t have a proctor, check with your state restaurant association, local health department or community college with a culinary or hospitality program to find out if a proctored online exam site is available in your area. Find an Instructor/Proctor or Find a Class. Examinees are encouraged to verify through independent sources that can help determine if an individual is affiliated with a legitimate business prior to registering and/or paying for a class or exam.
